Definition of a water pump
A pump is a hydraulic machine that converts energy. It transforms the mechanical energy of a prime mover (such as a motor) into the kinetic and potential energy of a liquid, achieving the purpose of transporting and elevating the liquid.
Due to the wide variety of pump types, there are different classification methods. Generally, pumps are divided into three main types based on their working principles.
1.2.1 Blade Pumps
Blade pumps achieve the pumping of liquids through the high-speed rotation of an impeller equipped with blades. Based on the direction of the water flow from the impeller, blade pumps can be classified into three types: radial flow, axial flow, and mixed flow. Pumps with radial flow impellers are called centrifugal pumps, where the liquid particles are primarily influenced by centrifugal force during flow; pumps with axial flow impellers are called axial flow pumps, where the liquid particles are mainly influenced by axial force during flow; pumps with mixed flow impellers are called mixed flow pumps, which are a transitional form of the above two types, where liquid particles are influenced by both centrifugal force and axial lift during flow.
1.2.2 Positive Displacement Pumps
Positive displacement pumps achieve the pressurization of liquids through changes in the volume of the pump's internal working chamber. The methods for changing the working chamber's volume can be either reciprocating motion or rotary motion. Reciprocating positive displacement pumps include piston pumps and plunger pumps; rotary positive displacement pumps include rotor pumps.
A schematic diagram of the working principle of a positive displacement pump is shown in Figure 1.2. When the piston is pulled to the right, the working chamber volume increases, pressure decreases, the inlet valve opens, the outlet valve closes, and water in the suction tank is influenced by atmospheric pressure.
