Definition of water pump
A water pump is a hydraulic machine that converts energy. It converts the mechanical energy of a prime mover (such as an electric motor) into the kinetic and potential energy of a liquid, achieving the purpose of conveying and raising the liquid.
Due to the wide variety of water pumps, there are various classification methods. Generally, water pumps are divided into three major types according to their working principles.
1.2.1 Impeller Pumps
Impeller pumps draw and deliver liquid through the high-speed rotation of an impeller with blades. According to the direction of the water flow from the impeller outlet, impeller pumps can be divided into three types: radial flow, axial flow, and mixed flow. Pumps with radial flow impellers are called centrifugal pumps; the liquid particles mainly experience centrifugal force when flowing in the impeller. Pumps with axial flow impellers are called axial flow pumps; the liquid particles mainly experience axial force when flowing in the impeller. Pumps with mixed flow impellers are called mixed flow pumps; they are a transitional form of the above two types of impellers, and the liquid particles are subjected to both centrifugal force and axial force when flowing in the impeller.
1.2.2 Positive Displacement Pumps
Positive displacement pumps pressurize liquids by changing the volume of the working chamber inside the pump. The methods of changing the working chamber volume include reciprocating motion and rotary motion. Positive displacement pumps with reciprocating motion include piston reciprocating pumps, plunger reciprocating pumps, etc.; those with rotary motion include rotary pumps, etc.
The working principle diagram of a positive displacement pump is shown in Figure 1.2. When the piston is pulled to the right, the working chamber volume increases, the pressure decreases, the inlet valve opens, the outlet valve closes, and the water in the water tank is drawn in under atmospheric pressure.
